Journey is the wordless story of a young girl finding adventure through imagination. In the style of Harold and the Purple Crayon, the protagonist, an unnamed girl, discovers a magical red marker that allows her to travel into another world where other magical markers exist. However, as she adventures through this new realm, using her red marker, she encounters a yellow samurai who is trying to capture all the magical markers. The protagonist must escape the yellow samurai with the help of her magical marker and other magical creatures in this world. Following this pictorial story of a girl searching for an adventure in her imagination is an enriching experience. Becker’s artistic flair provides a perfect medium for this wordless story, allowing the reader to be transfixed by the protagonist’s adventure despite the lack of words. Though intended for a young audience, this book explores high adventure and down-to-earth wonder in such a way that adults and children alike can appreciate the whimsey and beauty of Becker’s art and story.
