Carl Schurz (1829-1906) was born near Cologne, Germany. Having taken part in the German revolutionary movement of 1848, he fled from Germany, first to Paris and London before immigrating to the United States in 1852. He settled in Philadelphia and moved to Watertown, Wisconsin, in 1855. He practiced law in Milwaukee and was appointed Minister to Spain in 1861. During the Civil War he was appointed brigadier general of volunteers in the Union Army. He was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1869, to March 3, 1875.
