Robert J. Priest is professor of mission and intercultural studies and director of the Ph.D. in Intercultural Studies program at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, where he has served since 1999. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Columbia Bible College, a Master of Divinity from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, a Master of Arts in Social Science from the University of Chicago, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley.
Dr. Priest has worked in a variety of ministries, and has served as both youth director and assistant pastor. Born to career missionaries, he was raised in Bolivia and eventually returned to South America, where he conducted nearly two years of anthropological field research among the Aguaruna of Peru, focusing both on traditional religion and on spreading the gospel. On return visits to Peru he has researched short-term missions. Recently, he served as editor of the 2006 book This Side of Heaven: Race, Ethnicity and Christian Faith, published by Oxford University Press, and as editor of the October 2006 issue of Missiology, which focused on short-term missions. He has written on subjects as diverse as spiritual warfare, culture and conscience, and missionary kids.
Dr. Priest and his wife Kersten, a sociology professor at Wheaton College, have four children. Robert enjoys volleyball and soccer and fantasizes about someday running in the Chicago Marathon.
