Tite Tiénou is senior vice president of education, dean of Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and professor of theology of mission at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois. He has been at Trinity since 1997.
Prior to coming to Trinity, Dr. Tiénou served as president and dean of the Faculté de Théologie Evangélique de l'Alliance in Abidjan, Côte 'lvoire West Africa, and taught for nine years at Alliance Theological Seminary in Nyack, New York. He was the founding director and professor of the Maranatha Institute in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, in addition to being a pastor in the Central Church of the Christian Alliance Church.
Dr. Tiénou earned the Doctor of Philosophy in intercultural studies and the Master of Arts in missiology at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. He earned the Maîtrise en Théologie at Faculté Libre de Théologie Evangélique in Vaux-sur-Seine, France, and the Bachelor of Science in theology at Nyack College in New York where he graduated cum laude.
Dr. Tiénou's areas of expertise include missions, theology, and the church in Africa. He has been a member of the African Studies Association since 1991 and the OMSC Study Group on Mission Issues since 1985. Dr. Tiénou has also been a member of the Nyack Honor Society and received the Contextualization Award at the School of World Mission, Fuller Theological Seminary in 1984.
Dr. Tiénou has authored numerous books and articles, including The Theological Task of the Church in Africa (African Christian Press, 1990), published in both English and French, and Africa Journal of Evangelical Theology. He has written numerous articles, including "Biblical Foundations: An African Study'' (Evangelical Review of Theology, 1983), "Christianity in Africa'' (AIM International, 1989), "Have we created a religion of spectators?" (The Alliance Life, 1994), "In one case, a slow death, in the other, open warfare'' (Evangelical Missions Quarterly, 1986), and "The Future of ICAA [International Council of Accrediting Agencies for Evangelical Theological Education]" (Evangelical Review of Theology, 1995).
Dr. Tiénou served as the senior mission scholar in residence at Overseas Ministries Study Center in New Haven, Connecticut, and research fellow at Yale Divinity School from January to May 1990. He has also been chairman and chairman emeritus for the ICAA from 1989 to 1992 and was a member of the International Advisory Council for Lausanne II in Manila from 1986 to 1989.
Dr. Tiénou resides in the Chicagoland area with his wife, Marie, and their four children.
