Abstract
This essay explains the history of child mortality in 19th-century Cedarville, Ohio and connects it to Martha McMillan and journals. Florence, Martha’s daughter, died in 1888, and Martha records her personal grief from Florence’s death and the deaths of other children in the community in 1889. Martha’s 1889 journal records the incredible hospitality that shaped her community during times of grief from child moralities.
