An Innovative Approach to the Development, Delivery, and Assessment of Informatics Course for a Newly Established Doctor of Pharmacy Program

Objectives: To develop a well designed informatics course that incorporates active learning component to enhance students learning and to meet the 2007 Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) standards for informatics in pharmacy education.
Methods: A comprehensive systematic literature search using all related informatics search terms was conducted in Pubmed, International Pharmaceutical Abstract (IPA), and Cochrane Library from inception to January 2008. The American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP) website and the Internet were searched for additional information. The purpose of this search was to determine the status, structure, and content of informatics in pharmacy curriculum in accordance with the 2007 ACPE standards. Due to limited relevant information, two selected informatics text books and syllabi on Health Informatics Management were consulted. The American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) 2007 draft competency statements on informatics were reviewed. A comprehensive schematic proposed informatics course outline was then developed to incorporate all essential elements. An Active Learning component will be designed into the course delivery model. The program level outcomes, course outcomes, course objectives, and assessment tools will be developed jointly by the course coordinator and the Program Assessment committee in accordance with the 2007 ACPE standards for informatics education.
Results: Program level outcomes, course outcomes, course objectives, teaching pedagogy, and assessment tools for the course will be presented.
Implications: To provide valuable insights into the most suitable approach to develop, deliver, and assess informatics course in pharmacy education to assist students gain the knowledge and skills for their professional practice.
