Abstract
The Targums and the NT exegete Scripture messianically. That is, they both tend to 'disambiguate' messianic texts. The Targums most often do this through the use of the title 'the messiah,' while the NT applies messianic texts to Jesus. After discussing the dating of the Targums, the article examines the synagogue tradition common to the Targums and the NT, and works through examples of similar exegetical practice as applied to various OT messianic texts (Gen 1:1; 3:15; 49:1, 8-12; Num 24:17; Isa 52:13--53:12; Mic 5:1).
