Dr. Hwang was born to a psychologist's family in Taiwan. Her father, one of China’s pioneer psychologists, has been her role model. Following graduate school in the U.S., she went to Hong Kong in 1986 to join her husband who was teaching at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She developed an interest in cross-cultural research while in Hong Kong and has continued the pursuit in this area since then. She accepted an offer to join the faculty at the University of Houston and returned to the U.S. in 1988. She joined the faculty at Cedarville in 1991.
