Abstract

This paper examines Noah Webster's impact on the United States during the early 19th century through his linguistic work. His standardization of American English spelling and pronunciation, as well as his addition of Americanisms to The American Dictionary of the English Language, created a national culture that united the states at a time when their differences threatened to tear them apart.
