This book tells the story of John Glenn, the first American to go in outer space. From a young age, Glenn longed to fly. Despite airplanes and space travel being new things in the world, Glenn pursued his interests with determination. He became a pilot and served his country in the second world war. The climax of the story describes Glenn’s journey to space. The book is longer than most picture books and describes concepts that might be more difficult for younger readers. Upper elementary school students will enjoy learning about John Glenn. The brief glimpse into Glenn’s life will inspire readers to learn more about the historical figure and may be inspired to fly too. Teachers could use this book as supplementary to a unit on astronomy or science. Recommended Elly McGillivray Watkins, Centennial Library Intern, Cedarville University
