This story follows a young Asian-American girl’s examination of the different shape of her eyes compared to her friends’. Even when she first notices her different eye-shape, it models positive self-reflection to the reader by affirming her individuality as beautiful. Author Ho reinforces her message by linking the girl’s and her family’s eyes to positive words such as starlight, warm tea, and crescent moons. Illustrator Dung Ho follows this theme by filling the pages with sunlight, green and thriving plants, colorful and exotic creatures, and happy family interactions. Filled with positive language and cultural stories, Eyes that Kiss in the Corners could prompt reassuring family discussions about individuality.
