Writing and illustration combine to show an unborn baby’s journey from conception to birth. Using one fruit or vegetable for comparison, the book goes through each month and describes the unborn baby’s size. The baby forms from two tiny cells and grows to the size of a melon. The black background on each page highlights both the words and the colorful fruits and vegetables, and the words themselves reveal a theme of wonder and love that a mother feels for her child. The mother narrates the growth process to her child, making How You Came to Be a personal letter from mother to child. Parents—mothers in particular—may enjoy sharing this book with their kindergarten-age children.
Highly Recommended Rachel Crane, Centennial Library Intern, Cedarville University
