Review
Like many poets before them, the authors of this delightful collection took inspiration from nature, though tinges of our modern world color wistful, wry, and funny poems alike. Four chapters—fire, water, air, and earth—divide the poems into somewhat consistent themes supported by illustrations depicting a wide variety of scenes. Best suited for older elementary and middle school children, the poems range from a playful conversation between friends about what an old tree really looks like to the moon checking a child’s bedroom for evidence of bad dreams. In the afterword, the authors encourage children to play with their imaginations. Some of the depth in the metaphors might go over a younger child’s head, but these poems show poetry doesn’t have to rhyme or be serious; it’s ok to simply write about ordinary things as if they were extraordinary.
