This book follows the life of Queen Elizabeth alongside her beloved pet corgi Susan. An unconventional princess, Elizabeth found solace in the puppies of the palace. They comforted her and her sister during the bombs of World War II. For her eighteenth birthday, Elizabeth decided that she wanted a corgi puppy for her own. Susan became a constant companion, a friend who could always tell what Elizabeth was thinking and feeling. Susan eventually inspires Elizabeth to join a female regiment in order to assist her country during the war! Despite what the other residents of the palace thought about Susan, she would always be Elizabeth’s best friend. Susan even vetted Elizabeth’s future husband, Philip Mountbatten, and was part of the couple’s grand wedding. Though Susan eventually passed on, Elizabeth continued to raise Susan’s descendents throughout her tenure as queen. This book offers an interesting glimpse into Queen Elizabeth’s life through her beloved corgi Susan. Posing the book as about a dog rather than simply a historical figure entices otherwise uninterested children into picking up and reading the book. The bright colors used for the corgi ensure that it remains the focus on every page, thus keeping younger readers interested. While this book may be too lengthy to use for storytime in a school or library setting, this book is recommended for parents who want a bedtime story that is both entertaining and educational.
