Review

In Being Home, a young Cherokee girl and her mother set out on a journey to return to their ancestral land and community, leaving behind the hectic pace of the city. As they drive, the girl sketches scenes from the changing landscape, anticipating the reunion with family and the slower rhythms of life they’ll find there. The story is conveyed in simple, poetic language that uses rhythm and imagery rather than complex plot points to encourage feelings. Goade’s use of color, which ranges from grays and blues to greens, earth tones, and hints of pink, highlights the emotional and spatial transition in her mixed-media works, which alternate between cool, angular cityscapes and warm, organic views of nature. Parents, educators, or librarians can use this beautiful book as a starting point for conversations on migration, Indigenous identity, one's sense of place, and what "home" means to various people.
