Domenico Scarlatti: The Beginnings and Creation of the Classical Piano Sonata

The keyboard sonata is a musical work that many instrumentalists understand and have played at one point or another during their years of mastering their instruments. Many composers have tried their hand at writing a sonata and for some, their sonatas have been their crowning achievements. Some composers are more renowned for their sonatas compared to others, examples being Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Clementi, and Domenico Scarlatti. The sonata began to be developed during the Baroque era and even has its roots before this time, yet the largest development stage of the sonata is seen during the late Baroque era, especially during the lifetime of composer Domenico Scarlatti. It was Scarlatti that helped lay the foundation of the sonata that audiences enjoy to this day. Domenico Scarlatti helped develop the Classical sonata and the development is seen in Scarlatti’s history, his influences, and the elements used within his sonatas that became common for the eventual form of the sonata. This project shows the influence Domenico Scarlatti had on the creation and development of the classical piano sonata. The research process utilizes a basic research method relying on previously written books and personal accounts of Scarlatti’s life and compositional process. The essay shows how influential Scarlatti was in the overall development of the sonata from the end of the Baroque era to the Classical age.
