Proposal
The purpose of our presentation is to inform the audience of the challenges faced by youth who have aged out of the foster care system and the impact that the instability of the system has on their futures. Our literature review will cover the effects on the foster youth’s social, economic, and psychological and mental states. We will explore the social effects on the foster youth’s current and future relationships (including parenting, romantic partners, etc.), social skills, decision making, and the transition to adulthood. Then we will discuss the economic effects of homelessness, education, and job security. Finally, we will discuss the impact that aging out of the foster care system has on one’s likelihood of mental illnesses, criminal behavior, substance abuse, or suicide.
