Proposal

Opera is one of the most significant genres to emerge out of the Baroque era. It incorporated new elements and brought together many old ones in an elaborate, expressive, performance. Through deliberate study, one finds that the development of such a dramatic, musical production was not sudden but happened over a period of time in the Late Renaissance when there was a revival of Ancient Greek drama. A group called the camerata began to study the ancient styles and incorporated them into their own compositions. Consequently, the musical and expressive elements of Ancient Greece eventually became intertwined with Late Renaissance drama. These smaller genres gained prominence during the Late Renaissance and can now be viewed as predecessors to opera. The experimentation of Greek styles on these dramas ultimately led members of the camerata to compose the first operas and the genre flourished for centuries after. In my presentation, I will discuss the influence of Greek styles on Late Renaissance dramas and how this developed into the grand genre of opera.
