Self deprecating jokes have become the norm in modern day society. We often find this form of humor is able to alleviate stressful situations, cut through the tension, and even build relationships. This paper will discuss the phenomenon of using self-defeating jokes about one's physical disability in order to appease others. This research aims to reveal the consequences and the dangers of the overuse of jokes that violate one's psychological safety. First, we will elaborate on the causes of what drives someone to make self-defeating jokes. Through a personal account, multiple academic journals, and humor this paper will review the effects of the disabled communities perceives responsibility to put those around them at ease with their disability. Finally, the paper will elaborate the solutions to these false expectations on the disabled community.
