Gospel songs : a choice collection of hymns and tunes, new and old, for gospel meetings, prayer meetings, Sunday schools, etc. was compiled by Philip P. Bliss and published in 1874. Bliss (1838-1876) was an American composer and gospel singer. He wrote many well-known hymn tunes, including the tune for "It Is Well with My Soul". A friend of Dwight L. Moody, he died in a train wreck on his way to one of Moody's revival meetings. Cedarville University's original copy was published by John Church & Co. in Cincinnati, Ohio.
