Abstract
Although the study of metal-based polymers is a growing and important area of research, very few experiments involving these types of compounds are available for teaching labs. In this paper, we present such an experiment involving the preparation of three pyrazine-bridged coordination polymers of copper(II) nitrate and their characterization by IR spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). This lab will expose students to several aspects of inorganic chemistry such as synthesis, manipulation of air-sensitive compounds, and inorganic applications of IR spectroscopy and TGA.
