Carl E. Smith Collection
Born in Spring Valley, Ohio, in 1889, Carl E. Smith graduated from Miami-Jacobs Business College. In 1924/25 he served on the faculty of Cedarville College, Cedarville, Ohio, as an instructor in American literature and the head of the Commercial Department. While at Cedarville he also earned a B.S. degree in education. After leaving Cedarville, Smith owned a basset hound kennel in Xenia, Ohio, and bred hunting hounds. He compiled several books of his poetry, wrote a biography of his father, and authored a book on training hunting dogs. Recognizing over 90 years of achievement, the State of Ohio named Smith Ohio's poet laureate for 1983. Carl Smith died in 1987.
