Review
Remembering Vera is a precious recollection by Patricia Polacco of a dog that served as an honorary member of the United States Coast Guard. Vera became a famous mascot of a Coast Guard base because of her heroic actions when she rescued several people from a sinking boat and was awarded a Medal of Valor for her efforts. Following the story of this brave dog is a delight, and readers will love the story of how a rescue pup became a hero of the Coast Guard. Polacco recounts her own personal experience towards the end and ties the book up with a wonderful tribute to Vera. The illustration of the book is clumsily cute, and audiences will be enthralled with this true story. Though aimed at a younger audience, as evidenced by the writing style and illustrations, older audiences will find a good bit of enjoyment in the book as well.
