The U.S. Air Mail Service is dying, and it’s up to one man to save it. Jack Knight undertakes a daring 2,600-mile, thirty-hour flight to prove to Congress that the U.S. Air Mail Service can travel by day or night and deliver mail faster than trains. Under frigid conditions and fighting exhaustion, Jack struggles to reach his destination before his fuel runs out. His story makes him a national hero and marks a significant turning point in the history of the U.S. Mail System, whose rapid delivery was unthinkable 100 years ago. Young readers on a history assignment will find this book invaluable as it covers not only a significant development in the U.S. Mail System but also traces its history from the early settlers of America to the present day. Readers will also likely be thrilled by Jack’s story, which reads like an action movie. The illustrations convey a sense of danger, the dominant blue tones reflecting the freezing blizzard conditions of the flight. This book would be a great addition to any library. Highly Recommended. Alexis Chandler, Centennial Library Intern.
