Hedgehog loves to bake cookies for all her friends, but what should she make for Bear, her best friend? After drafting a plan, Hedgehog undertakes an ambitious project to make Bear the best and most elaborate cookie yet. But on her way to deliver it, disaster strikes! The gift is ruined—how will Bear react? With themes of friendship, thankfulness, and just spending quality time with one another, this book would be popular with young readers, especially those who like to bake. A likable protagonist in Hedgehog will help readers engage in the story. Additionally, recipes inside the front cover may encourage readers to make cookies together like Bear and Hedgehog. However, younger readers will need adult supervision and assistance in the kitchen. While the text does not explicitly mention Christmas, the illustrations heavily suggest that The Best Gift for Bear is a Christmas book, which may limit the use of the book. Still, it would be a great addition to a holiday collection. Recommended. Alexis Chandler, Centennial Library Intern.
