Felix gets to meet his grandma for the first time when she arrives from Vietnam. Loving the time he can spend getting to know her, he quickly realizes the language barrier is different for her, especially in scary situations. So, Felix asks her if she wants him to teach her English so that she can communicate with others. Their language project helps them connect, but sometimes being together is enough, no words needed, especially when Felix loses his pet iguana. Words Between Us shows children in K-1st grade how to communicate with those around them who may speak differently and how to love them well. The illustrations portray their love for each other in the trials and good times, providing an insight into how tough it can be learning a new language. This book would best be used in a classroom setting, particularly in a social studies unit that explores other cultures and how they are beautiful yet different.
