In Kozo the Sparrow, the main character rescues a baby sparrow from a few boys who bullied him in school. He gives many of his possessions to the bullies to convince them to give him the sparrow, and he names the sparrow Kozo. The main character and Kozo spend time together, and the main character becomes afraid when he thinks he will lose Kozo. At the end of the book, the main character runs from the bullies after taking Kozo with him to school. He eventually lets Kozo out of his cage, and the young bird flies away. This book is a good selection for young readers who are in search of a friend, and it may be encouraging for victims of bullying. This book is based on Allen Say’s childhood in Japan following World War II.
