The journal was kept by Paul McMillan from June 7, 1905, through July, 9, 1905, while James and Martha traveled to Iowa, Missouri, and Illinois. Martha began writing in the journal again on July 9. She kept a separate journal while they were away, dated from June 6 through July 8, and that journal has been inserted at the back of the 1905 journal.
