Since she had reached the end of the year. Martha McMillan removed pages 221-300 from this journal, probably to be put to another use. Rankin MacMillan, in his notes on this journal, stated that while James and Martha were in California from December 18, 1903, until July 21, 1904, cousin Mary Murdock and a farm worker, Charles Baskin, maintained the journal.
