Proposal

Music development has been influenced by the philosophies and religions of different cultures and the individuals involved in writing and performing music since the beginning of time. The relationship between the music of the Renaissance and the philosophy of humanism is an excellent example of the influence a culture’s values have on its cultural products. The philosophy during the Renaissance was the result of the combining of old ideas from Ancient times with new interpretations, influenced by philosophers and musicians such as Petrarch, Clement Janequin, Josquin, Adrian Willaert, and Claudio Monteverdi . The resulting mindset greatly influenced the musical ideals and values that rose to the surface during that era. This presentation will further compare and contrast the values of humanism with the values of Renaissance music.
