Books Make Good Friends describes Lottie, the main character of the book, and how much she loves reading books. Lottie loves reading books so much that she prefers to stay in her room most of the time. She’s lonely at school, and she would rather read than be with her family. Over time, she experiences the “real” world, and she discovers that it’s not so bad after all. These new experiences allow her to make new friends, and while she still loves reading books, she acknowledges that it is good to have friends. While the author tells Lottie’s story, she includes commentary and illustrations about different types of books. At the end of the book, Lottie begins reaching out to others, including the new lonely kid at school. This book is an excellent selection for shy children. It explains that there are good things about making friends and experiencing new things, and it also advocates for children to read books.
