My Lost Freedom: A Japanese American World War II Story
Takei, George

My Lost Freedom is a touching biography of George Takei’s time in the Japanese American internment camps in World War II. The story follows the perspective of Takei as a young child and thus the observations are more in-line with details a child would notice. The simplistic style of the illustrations also fits with the story being told from the perspective of a young child. Takei’s parents play a vital role in protecting their family and providing the best life possible despite the lower quality of life in the camps. The story shows the influence parents have on their kids and how parents can pass on values. This book would be a good way to introduce young readers to the issue of internment in World War II because it accurately conveys the problems of the time in an age-appropriate manner.
Highly Recommended, Nate Borling, Centennial Library Intern, Cedarville University
